Re: Why is Islam growing fastest?
Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes. Buck Murdock said it; it must be true.

Re: Questions to Muslim Mandelson
There's some irony in finding the use of 'mate' unacceptable while defending, say, casual profanity.
But if it's that bothersome you could always use the South Park derail.

Re: De-God Your Money
I can see why someone might be inspired to do that, but I wouldn't. I enjoy the subtle humor of such a worshipful motto on our money.

Re: ... malevolent bully.
It is interesting to see the 'law was fulfilled, so it went away' defense, as if all of xianity accepted this to be true. Of course, if it were generally accepted, we wouldn't have bible-bashers invoking rules from Leviticus in order to harass homosexuals, blissfully ignorant of the blasphemous natu...

Re: ... malevolent bully.
I don't have mountains of evidence that Jesus rose from the dead. I have a little evidence that he did and you have none that he didn't. I win! It is interesting to see, spelled out so plainly, the quality of evidence by which believers choose to take on ridiculous belief systems and spend such qua...

Re: The holy waters of the River Jordan are full of crap
Yuck! Why do people keep going there to be baptised in that poisonous filth? The water that Jesus was baptised in has long since flowed away downstream. Should Ruper Murdoch be condemned for child abuse? Who would dunk their children in a bathtub full of toilet? Worse still, in the name of the lord...

Re: But what if you're wrong...?
It would be interesting to meet a believer who actually believed in this Wager after having the bet-hedging part explained to them. As it happens I was just reading part of Dawkins' God Delusion today that covers it. Would you bet on God's valuing dishonestly faked belief (or even honest belief) ove...

Re: 5 reasons atheism is irrational
...So the conviction in the end, after checking there are no obvious fallacies, comes from prayer, faith and (I would say) God. No obvious fallacies? Like appeal to ignorance, appeal to authority, appeal to tradition, emotion appeal, special pleading, circular reasoning, begging the question, etc, ...

Re: 5 reasons atheism is irrational
Tytalus - I think whenever we are drawn to someone or something we should put our "safety hat" on. I don't think there is any good or bad about being drawn by itself; we may be drawn to sport which is likely to be good for us, or we may be drawn to drugs which is likely to be bad for us. I remember...

Re: 5 reasons atheism is irrational
It is interesting that Theophilus' story attempts to reconcile baseless faith with 'checking' for 'obvious fallacies'. But while baseless faith fails on its own lack of merit, I did spot one possible error in 'internal consistency' that seems quite fundamental. I felt drawn (back) into Christianity ...

Re: Sex on the new forum
I was about to ask whose tongue, and in which cheek...damn, predictable.
I will check out the RS thread, however, and check in on the subject. Can't make any promises, though, as I am no mod/donator type and I go for subtle humor anyway.

Re: Ontological arguement
pcCoder summed up my objection to the ontological argument, and I think it's one of those mentioned on its wiki page. Making 'existence' a quality of 'perfection' doesn't follow. In the end, it's just another attempt to define some god-concept into existence. It sure is a shame that believers like P...

Re: News coverage
I would have thought that the premise of it being illegal to pray in schools wouldn't pass the smell test, but oh well. I understand many students are driven to prayer on occasion, perhaps prompted by an imminent test or quiz. I can't remember ever doing so myself when I was a xian, but I might have.

Re: News coverage
On the subject of attacking non-forum members, not long before the demise of the forum I participated in a discussion on Darwin as a racist, which as it happens was also permitted (just like bashing Ken Ham). As for having something better to do, sheesh. Of course it's childish and silly. I doubt an...
