The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Leroy knows where it was sunk after the war, and after a few decades Leroy salvages it?DP wrote:Hmmm, that does remain a mystery, it looks fairly beat up though, like it spent a few years underwater.

Good point, Salvaging it after the war doesn't sound likely though, sold off as scrap after the navy finished looking it over?Gawdzilla wrote:I don't see it rolling on that canopy and looking like that.DP wrote:I was thinking more like a big ass hurricane blows through there a few years ago and dredges this thing up off the floor of the gulf of Mexico.Gawdzilla wrote:Leroy knows where it was sunk after the war, and after a few decades Leroy salvages it?DP wrote:Hmmm, that does remain a mystery, it looks fairly beat up though, like it spent a few years underwater.

From experience my guess is they had at least two, and one sank, which evoked a shrug and "let's get on with it." A glorified (and redundant) torpedo wouldn't call for a major salvage operations. Still, the scrap theory would account for the condition as I'd expect worse from a few decades of salt water.DP wrote:Good point, Salvaging it after the war doesn't sound likely though, sold off as scrap after the navy finished looking it over?

60 years in the Atlantic would probably have dissolved that little boat, anyone you know in the service who might be able to find out if there were a few of those floating around the gulf in the 40's?Gawdzilla wrote:From experience my guess is they had at least two, and one sank, which evoked a shrug and "let's get on with it." You check for declassified files relating to mini subs or covert naval delivery vehicles from that era?Gawdzilla wrote:Yeah, but he's in Mexico right now. Most stuff from that era should be available by now, shouldn't it?Gawdzilla wrote:I know the files to check, it's just a matter of getting them.DP wrote:You check for declassified files relating to mini subs or covert naval delivery vehicles from that era?Gawdzilla wrote:Yeah, but he's in Mexico right now. Even stuff that was FEO should be open after 65 years.

Major dredge, did you ever get an id on this thing?
If not, look at Italian mini subs, called the miale, or similar, translates as pig.
