Archaeologists believe no Spitfires buried in Burma

Archaeologists hunting for World War II Spitfires in Burma believe there are no planes buried at the sites where they have been digging, the BBC understands.

The archaeologists have concluded that evidence does not support the original claim that as many as 124 Spitfires were buried at the end of the war, the BBC's Fergal Keane reports.

Wargaming.net, the firm financing the dig, has also said there are no planes.

But project leader David Cundall says they are looking in the wrong place.

He told the BBC that he feels very frustrated but is determined to keep up his campaign, and remains convinced Spitfires are buried in Burma.

The title (from the BBC) is misleading. The article makes it quite clear that they are not where had been thought, but wherever they are buried could still be in Burma. :prof:

The places they could be vastly outnumber the places searched.

Yea, but they're still likely to be in Burma ... somewhere. The headline claims they're not in Burma, which clearly implies that they are not buried anywhere under Burmese soil. How do they know that then? :eddy:

Blame the sub-editor who wrote the headline. :mob:

Spitfire vs. AM6 was an interesting match.

Why were these Spits buried? Were they anticipating a sudden need for them sometime in the future? :ask:

That assumes some are buried somewhere and also that the archeologists believe that there are some buried in Burma.

The archeologist involved probably think the guy's a nutter and now discredit every claim he's making?

The headline just makes a statement about the beliefs of the archeologists, not about planes in Burma.
