I had to look at that picture for some time, before seeing the gaping hole toward the stern.
Thing is, though, they built those Liberty Ships well. You could slice one clean in two amidships, and the two ends would continue to float. If memory serves, there's photos of the two halves of one Liberty Ship, still afloat, both of which made it somehow to Liverpool.
