Re: The Cure
I take it you are referring to the band and not the mercury vapours used to sweat out the nasty little results of ones indiscretions? If you want advice on the latter, I suggest you ask Clinton - I believe he has seen a little of that kind of thing in the Crimea (and Covent Garden.)
In that case, I shall continue. Marks out of ten for all of the main studio albums.
The first album - 3 Imaginary Boys - is interesting but doesn't really sound like The Cure. 6/10
The next three - Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography are absolute classics. This is dark, brooding stuff - teenage angst carved into bizarre soundshapes. I would start with these three albums. 9/10, 9.5/10 & 10/10 respectively.
After Pornography, the band suddenly go pop! The next few albums see them releasing chart singles and being played in discos! The albums from this period get progressively better, as Rob and the boys learn how to integrate their pop aspirations into their existing sound.
Japanese Whispers - 6/10 - Pure pop Cure and not great.
The Top - 7/10 - A little of the darkness blended back in but not the real deal.
The Head on the Door - 8/10 - The early chill perfectly combined with their later, chart-friendly side.
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - 8.5/10 - A huge mess of an album that goes in all sorts of directions but really works on a lot of them. Recommended.
Next a total classic - Disintegration - 9.5/10 - A return to dark, brooding introspection but with far more technical prowess than Pornography. Be sure to buy this one.
Wish is more poppy but still interesting - 7.5/10 - but the next album - Wild Mood Swings is pop-Cure without any good songs on it - avoid - 5/10.
Bloodflowers was billed as the third album in the 'dark trilogy' including Pornography and Disintegration. Sadly, it doesn't quite live up to its billing, the songs being too samey, but is still worth having. 7.5/10
The last two albums - The Cure and 4:13 Dream are average, Cure-by-numbers efforts with nothing really great in them but nothing terrible either. Worth having but they won't add anything to your life. 6.5/10 for each of them.
