The Iron Maiden appreciation thread

Post by Chinaski » Thu Jun 18, 2009 12:48 pm

After watching the new documentary on Maiden, Flight 666, I feel it is an imperative as appreciators of fine music to express feelings of awe and praise towards Iron Maiden. Feel free to adulate.

Seriously though, how fucking awesome is Maiden???

I never really thought they were that great. They just recycled old Sabbath and Purple riffs and played them a bit faster. There are many other metal bands from that era that were technically better and more innovative.

Yeah like Megadetha n Anthrax. Iron Maiden sucked salty Orca balls.

BS. Maiden had (still have) great melodies, innovative riffs and were all around more interesting than Purple or Anthrax. Sabbath are better, although the comparison is inane, and Megadeth I always found really boring.

I love maiden.

The earlier the better though for me. (Not completely true, as I have a soft spot for No Prayer for the Dying.)

Recycled Sabbath and Purple? Unfair in my opinion, especially considering Sabbath went in Maiden's sound direction when they took on Dio as their front man. Also Sabbath and Purple were influences of Maiden, I would expect to hear some of that coming through, it happens with every band. I agree with the latter part they weren't technically the greatest or the most innovative, but I don't see how that takes away the enjoyment of listening to them, nor does it take away from their influence on successive generations of bands/musicians. For that alone I think they deserve appreciation.

Sabbath were not Sabbath after Ozzy left. Not really. All of their truly great albums came before there was an Iron Maiden.

I lived through the NWOBHM, which spawned Maiden, Saxon, Def Retard, etc. Along with dozens of others that never made it into the 80's.

The first, and only truly influential, English band of that era to my mind was Motorhead. They speeded up metal and blended it with punk as early as 1977. All Maiden did was to take the punk-tinged Motorhead power and add it to tried and trusted riffs, losing half of the aggression along the way.

Lemmy and the boys led the way - Maiden merely followed.

I agree, Sabbath were at their best with Ozzy, and broke new ground along the way.

Again, I am agreeing with you. As I said in my other post, Iron Maiden weren't the most innovative band of the era, but I don't see why that is a fault. I enjoy listening to their music, and whilst being innovative does make a band more interesting, I don't find it a prerequisite for enjoying a band or genre of music. To me Maiden sound good and that's enough for me.

As for Motorhead, no doubt an amazing band. The only influential one though? I would add Judas Priest to that, they were also following the metal blueprint around the same time (Sin After Sin in 1977 and the release of Stained Class in '78 spring to mind). They were developing that sound since 1974.

Excuse me for being a bit beered up! Of course Motorhead weren't the only influential band. They were certainly the most influential though. Priest were a great band too - and added far more to metal than Maiden did. Other bands around the same time that added far more that was new to the genre were Scorpions, UFO, and how could I forget Van Halen!!?
