The point of these terror attacks by islamists in the West is to rile up tension between different communities.

Make terror attack -> Provoke backlash against muslims -> Breeding ground for more extremism.

The most helpful reaction to such attacks is to morn the victims, improve work of the police and services and NOT have any other political or social implications.

I guess this is where Western inaction on Palestine has brought us. The cumulative effect of decades of defending and enabling Israeli military endeavours against a section of its own population has led to international relationships wholly defined by Israel's internal political landscape and its relentless anti-Palestinian propaganda. Thus, even moderate criticism of Isreal over Palestine is now thrown back at us as being indistinguishable from supporting the eradication of Isreal as a Jewish state and championing the murder of Jews, either in Israel or abroad. To listen to Netanyahu disingenuous rhetoric you'd have thought Albanese loaded the guns and pulled the trigger.

By the twisted logic of sectarianism, violence from one side is always the fault and responsibility of those on the receiving end of it. And condemning the violence of one side is always taken as explicit support for the violence of the other. But ordinary Palestinians are no more responsible for the IDF carpet-bombing them in tents than those ordinary Australians were responsible for being murdered by Islamic nutjobs.

Absolutely right. The Oz right-wing opposition is clearly saying that the government should have banned all pro-Palestine protests. Now, within those protests was occasional examples of clear anti-semitism, which should have been stamped on, and I would be perfectly happy to see all the radical Islamic preachers arrested and interned. But legitimate protest against the Israeli government's actions must be protected.

‘Hateful’ chants and flags to be banned as Islamic State claims it ‘inspired’ Bondi attack

The pro-Palestine chant “globalise the intifada” would also be banned under NSW’s new laws. The slogan refers to a Palestinian resistance against Israel. Intifada is the Arabic word for rebellion, uprising, resistance or shaking off.

“Horrific recent events have shown that [this chant] is hate speech, and it encourages violence in our community,” Minns said.

“We’ve got strong advice indicating that [it] is already in breach of hate speech laws in NSW; this legislation will put it beyond a shadow of a doubt.”

In a statement, the Palestine Action Group, which organises weekly pro-Palestine protests in the Sydney CBD, said any labelling of the word intifada as hate speech was “ridiculous, ignorant and offensive”.

“[It] refers to the efforts of Palestinians through mass protests and uprisings to shake off the illegal occupation and apartheid racist policies that the state of Israel imposes on the Palestinian people,” the statement read.

“There is absolutely nothing antisemitic about this word or associated chants.”
