Meanwhile in Iceland…

Post by Sean Hayden » Sun Jun 23, 2024 5:42 am

I’m sure this thread will take off..
Meet Iceland’s Whaling Magnate. He Makes No Apologies. Kristjan Loftsson’s company is the last one in the world still hunting fin whales. His credo: “If it’s sustainable, you hunt.”
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/10/clim ... aling.html

He’s been whaling since he was 13, so it’s hardly surprising he’s fine with it. What’s crazy to me is that anyone can support a business with it today. I’ve never seen whale meat. The author briefly touches on this point and claims Japan buys almost all of the meat. Almost all of the meat? Who knew there were so many ways to eat a whale.

I'm sure they're udderly delicious. But none for me, thanks. They're too high up on the evolutionary chain.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Yeah, the article mentions exploding harpoons and that sometimes it takes a few tries to kill the whale. I wonder what that means? Do they occasionally just blow off a jaw, some gut, or a fin?

The world is watching...
Government Coalition Collapses, Elections Set for November
Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsdóttir announced at a snap press conference this afternoon that he is ending the government coalition and calling for elections on 30 November.

At the Prime Minister’s office, Bjarni told reporters that the coalition of his Independence Party with the Progressive Party and Left-Green Movement, which has been in power since 2017, had accomplished many things during a difficult period of time which included a global pandemic and volcanic activity in the Reykjanes peninsula. He said he’d tried his best to reach an agreement on issues with the coalition parties, but that he’d exhausted all possibilites.

It's a bit of an odd country. It makes very little other than electricity and some aluminum with that. Bit of fishing.

I'v liked it as a tourist. Just a quaint place with lots of sheep. And iceland horses. One of which stepped on m foot.

Just a reminder it is only 300,000 people and gets millions of visitors and has the oldest continuous democracy.
