I call it racist to push the ignorant notion that Islam is somehow 'brown people'. Islam is a religion available to everyone who will submit.

Getting to your main point though, if someone conflates muslims with a race, they are, in my opinion, using racism politically to push division.

Also, if someone jumps to the defense of people solely based on their religion, it looks indistinguishable from defending religion, to me.
