My mother always told me that there were starving kids in China, and that I ever met them they'd eat me if I didn't eat them first, so I'd better finish my dinner as practice... :shifty:

Oh I didn't say that it did. But one should keep in mind that the atheist movement is fairly male-heavy (at least in the US) for example, so if I were a single male looking for a date, it would actually potentially advantageous to be a believer. Self-interest alone does not a justification for atheism make.
But that's a fallacy. Just because it might be advantageous doesn't mean it's right, let alone true.

We dare be puir for a' that.

That's exactly what I said! I was claiming that self-interest is not the same a morally correct (that the truth is more important), which means that (on that point at least) I'm in agreement with the author of this article and not PZ.

Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

"Myers admits there is no morality or anything that imposes it either (i.e., God) in his worldview."
Fail from the first sentence. Of course there's such a thing as morality, only we ourselves define it and impose it upon ourselves. The point is that the Universe is indifferent, and there's no god pulling the strings. From here on in the article, the logic just gets more twisted and convoluted as fallacies and erroneous conclusions get intertwined into one big clusterfuck.

Amusing that Myers is accused of "hate speech" for presumably calling creationism out for what it is: bollocks :hehe:
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

I can beat it:

Allow me to titillate with a brief quote:

"As you can see, the logic is inescapable -- Kangaroos must have once lived in the Middle East."
P1: I am a nobody.
P2: Nobody is perfect.
C: Therefore, I am perfect

andrewclunn wrote:Actually, it makes sense (based on what PZ said.) If in fact it turns out that it's more beneficial to survival (either personal, genetic or ideological) to have a faith element in one's belief system, then it will in fact beat out rational thought based on the principles of evolution (even if you don't believe in evolution.) That's one of the reasons I reject postmodernism.
I don't think there's an advantage to religious faith per se, but there's an advantage to accepting things on faith to a certain extent. You have to listen to what your parents tell you when you're very young to keep you safe, for instance, because you don't know any better. This has the unfortunate side effect, however, of yielding religious faith as a by-product :?
