"Young Adult" Novels You Like

Post by Bella Fortuna » Mon Mar 08, 2010 6:25 pm

Books today are so much cooler and more varied than when I was a kid... do you have any ones you like that are aimed at the 'young adult' market?

One of my favourites is Sorcery and Cecelia; or, The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Caroline Stevermer and Patricia Wrede. It's an alternative history novel that was great fun.

In 1817 in England, two young cousins, Cecilia living in the country and Kate in London, write letters to keep each other informed of their exploits, which take a sinister turn when they find themselves confronted by evil wizards.

Is "The Red Planet" the Heinlein one, with Willis? If it is, that and Podkayne I must have read a couple dozen times each.

The novelization of "Debbie Does Dallas" was really excellent. As a young man I would have been enthralled by the mission this young woman set for herself and the strong support of her friends as they helped her to realize her goal. Recommended for young wankers of all ages.

Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea books. I first read these when I was about 13 and I get more out of them every time.

'A Wrnkle in Time' and its sequels (Madeleine L'engle) are perennial favorites of mine, as is ' A Secret Garden' , by Lucy Maud Montgomery. These all hold up well to reading or re-reading as an adult.

I have to admit, I haven't gotten too into Harry Potter, or His Dark Materials, or whatever-- I think there's something to having read these books as a young adult that makes the re-reading of them now so satisfying-- and so sometimes poignant.

As for picture books, on the other hand, well, I will read a good one of those any day of the week-- I love illustration.

The first two movie my Dad rented when we got our VCR back in the 80's was 'Witness' (you know, with Harrison Ford and the Amish people), and 'Debbie Does Dallas'

I was in middle school at the time, so I didn't stick around for the second show in that weird-ass double feature. That being the case, I'm not sure I can second your recommendation.

A friend of mine spent $2500 on a VHS/TV combo when they first came out. DDD (You have love the Triple D connotations of that, btw) was one of his prize collection. $79.95 for that thing. :pawiz:
