Wow, that's quite a vision.
It reminds me a little of Blind Faith by Ben Elton.
It also ties into Susan Blackmore's 'temes' (Technology memes), as entities that shape us for thier own survival. Humanity driven by technological ideas. Something existing because it can, because it spreads.

We crave reality because we are lost in the game?

You could make a religion out of that.
