Picked it up for the DS with mixed dread and anticipation.
Not as good as my highest expectations, but well up there as one of the more enjoyable games in recent times...
Been playing it for the past five hours and I'm still only near the very beginning... true JRPG style.
Dragon Quest IX
Dragon Quest IX

Re: Dragon Quest IX
Oh Jesus that's a hell of a slog...
Okay, so the game is a bitch.
In every sense.
Levelling takes forever. By the time I'd finished the final boss my characters - at their highest - would have been around 55-60. However, when you change classes your character's level is set back to 1 (though you keep any abilities... not spells though). And you really do have to change classes because those you unlock offer some very real benefits over the 'default' classes.
So you spend half your time levelling.
And collecting gold.
And collecting ingredients.
All to alchemise or buy equipment because equipment is the real deciding factor in how strong your character is.
So you slog through deserts and arctic regions and open plains killing anything and everything that moves to buy the best gear to kill the dungeon boss... and they you rinse and repeat at the next town.
Dull, yeah.
But... I still played it. And played it. And played it. And got my characters to level 40 twice, after unlocking all the side-classes, and eventually rocked my way up to the final boss.
And then it's over. Well, you do get some post-game content, and there's some 'dlc' available over a network though I'm not sure whether you'd have to pay for it or what, as there are no suitable internet connections for my DS.
One thing that did become evident was that the game was built for multi-player. The singleplayer content is there, yeah, but multiplayer is really where the game would shine.
