Garbage by any other name still smells. I'm not impressed with Mr. Close.

And subjective opinion by any other name is still subjective opinion. You don't like it - fine - but dismissing someone's life-work as garbage because it isn't your cup of tea is beneath you.

I think American football is dull but I respect the fact that others enjoy it. I personally think that a lot of modern art is rubbish - but I would hesitate to sneer at another's opinion of that art. I would challenge their opinion, certainly, but if they firmly held it, and could offer justification for that opinion, I would accept that that was their view and agree to differ. You come across as extremely dogmatic in your 'belief' that all modern art is rubbish and seem to have a dismissive attitude towards differing views - I think that is wrong of you.

It's my honest opinion, and I'd tell him to his face that I think his work is garbage. If he had a problem with that then he'd have a problem.

You stated that Chuck Close's work is garbage. You made no attempt to weigh up the good or bad points of that work, offered no evidence for its garbagosity, you merely said, "garbage." In fact, you have pretty much said the same of all modern art in both this thread and the previous one on the subject. I have not seen one post in which you explain exactly what you find so garbagy about any particular piece and certainly not one single post in which you admit that a work has merit but that it is not to your taste. No, you just say GARBAGE. To me, that is dogmatic and dismissive. Isn't it to you?

I think YOU should read your own posts and explain where I have misjudged you here. Give me specific reasons why 'modern art' (whatever that term implies to you) is universally garbage and I am sure that I can provide counter-examples that will contradict any of those reasons. We are talking about 100 years+ of work here - it is hardly modern any more.

Chuck Close is in a wheelchair and paints with a brush strapped to his arm - he has done since the 90's. i mentioned the fact above. You said that 'he would have a problem' if he didn't like you calling his work garbage - that sounded like a threat of violence to me. Clearer now?

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I would tell him to his face that I thought his work was garbage. He's bound to have heard that before. I'm not required to like his work just because he's a gimp.

I haven't had a drink all day. I am still waiting for a reasoned argument as to why modern art is garbage. All you have presented is a blind assertion. Perhaps you should sober up yourself.
