Kind of hard to believe based on his blog that PZ Myers is a PhD and College Professor. I hope his demeanor is more polite and mature towards his students than he is to strangers on his blog.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Several years ago we were camping with my dad and a large grasshopper (5cm-ish long 1cm thick at the head) landed on my sister's stroller. Beautiful thing with streaks of gray and dark orange. I caught it so everyone could have a closer look and someone (may have been me) remembered my willingness to eat pretty much anything. I rinsed it off, stuck it between my molars and gave it a chomp. It was pretty tasty, actually. Kind of sweet and tangy, but also had a nuttiness about it. Apples & Walnuts, if i remember my description at the time correctly.
ETA: for some reason i never had it in me to eat the crickets we fed our bearded dragon.

With three times the protein as steak, if I remember correctly from my field biology days. I remember dissecting them and was surprised how much meat was in there. I've never eaten them, but your taste description is spot on from what I recall. Cicadas are also supposed to be good eat'n, but I'll pass on that too.cogwheel wrote:** TRIGGER WARNING FOR BARFING **Badger3k wrote:You know, I've never eaten bugs (intentionally - in the Army and while landscaping, I did eat a lot of bugs unintentionally - never did Jungle Survival), and am not big on trying new things until recently, but that actually looks good.

I'm not sure I could eat it live either. That's a little creepy, but to be true to my willingness to be open to new experiences, I'd probably try it. I might have to clean my underwear, but...cogwheel wrote:** TRIGGER WARNING FOR BARFING **Badger3k wrote:You know, I've never eaten bugs (intentionally - in the Army and while landscaping, I did eat a lot of bugs unintentionally - never did Jungle Survival), and am not big on trying new things until recently, but that actually looks good.

Trigger warning here too -
I had a friend who did go to the survival school in panama (well, it was the Jungle Warfare school, but survival was part) and when we were landscaping he found a large grub. Wiped it off, popped it in his mouth, and crunched away. I didn't want to join him, but it didn't make me gag like some of the other guys. In some ways I have a stronger constitution - I used to watch surgery on tv while eating dinner. Granted, the one where they peeled the persons face back for some operation was a bit gross once I realized what they did, but I kept eating. When I had a cyst removed from my chest, I was awake (it was only a local, one of my, damn, milk glands - whatever - had gone bad and had to be removed) and got to watch the whole thing in the surgeon's goggles. Pretty cool actually. I won't go into the details of the recovery and the gauze, but I've had people cringing when I describe it. There were somethings even I didn't want to do, or had trouble with. If anybody wants to be freaked out a bit, I have no problems talking about it, but in deference to others I'll stop here. Oh, and steroid shots to the shoulder - needle on bone pain ..... the worst ever!

Back in high school or college, I forget where, we had someone talking about Africa, and they brought up that when they had locust infestations, a lot of people would just grab them on the fly and eat them right there. Also, watch Survivorman (I prefer Les over Bear anyway). He eats a lot of stuff we "civilized folk" consider strange.Tyrannical wrote:With three times the protein as steak, if I remember correctly from my field biology days. Sorry to hear that Wood. Thank you for sharing nonetheless. What I find interesting is how you as a victim of abuse do not take objection to a joke about rape, but the reaction of others to it though. I have seen it elsewhere too, where someone told a joke about abuse even though they had been abused themselves. I myself would not make such jokes, but if others wish to, that is their prerogative. Anyway, thanks for sharing. We now have two members here that have suffered abuse, and have made such knowledge public, on a site that in some quarters at least, is seen as being predominantly composed of rape apologists or enablers. I find that rather interesting. Nothing in life is absolutely black and white. There are always shades of grey.Woodbutcher wrote:
Pappa`s OP did not bother me; I thought it was tasteless, but harmless. PZ and his minions bickering and whining for apologies in a fucking supercilious manner set my teeth on edge, though. Those fucking whiners do not seem to realize that a comment can be ignored, but to fucking carry on and lambast everybody left and right is abuse which brings back bad memories to those of us who were abused, physically or sexually. I remembered being beaten with a belt and then told to apologize, but I was too young to know what I had done wrong. Sexual abuse after that. I tried drinking myself to death but realized maybe I was OK after all. I still have trouble associating with people, and I`m 62. Funny how hard it is sometimes to slip back from being a survivor to a victim. The trigger is always an argument, not a comment or a joke. An argument is done from a position of authority, that is where all the abuse starts. And the body always remembers and overrules the brain.
I never told anybody this before. I`m OK now. for a while.

Hey WB, I had no idea. It's terrible that that stuff happened to you. I'm glad that you're comfortable enough here that you felt you could share though. It's a shame you live so far away, as I'd very much like to meet you one day.

PZ, how about we both quit the invective and actually engage in a dialogue?
I'm curious what you hope to achieve by publicly calling out someone on a forum and then coming back to snipe? How does it benefit the goal in any way? There are huge targets everywhere, yet you seem to pick something for no greater reason than to stoke up the hate of your followers. Obviously, I could be wrong about that, so educate me.

PZ has requested his account be de-activated.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

That's as simple as not posting, isn't it?
I mean, is he asking for his account to be locked? Or is he asking that his posts all be deleted?

Phew. This should not be memory-holed, which was what that appeared to be at first.rachelbean wrote:We don't delete posts or accounts, we just suspend indefinitely.
