What I don't understand is how you and Spinozasgalt get away with some very spiteful insults to one another, the insults with Scarlett are obviously jokes but I don't get that for the other interaction. You two don't report each other so fair enough there, though a lot of the other posters wouldn't get away with half of that kind of behaviour?

It's not much effort to sock. It takes some work to get away with it for a longer period, though. I had some big plans for my second sock "Mr Sparkle", but the bastards got me straight away! I've still got an elaborate plan in mind, but to be honest it's hard to generate the will power to pull it off properly. Maybe one day if I have a few quiet and boring weeks... :evilgrin:

Yes, they do. While I was a mod in some forum for a few years I could trace the physical location a post was entered from as well as the IPA address of the individual device that was used to type it, then check if it matched posts from other members. The procedure involved no scripting, coding or other tricks. It was as simple as clicking on some buttons.

The forum had a "no socks allowed policy". Members were supposed to be banned along with their socks. I thought that was over the top, so I just sent private messages to the holder of the primary account, and told them that if they limited their postings to one account, they can keep that. It worked every time, including with one who was operating three socks concurrently.

Rubbish. You can get the browser type and version and the operating system and version, but the browser one is unreliable. All the big ISP's proxy out of a central location. Telstra out of Sydney and Optus out of Adelaide. You can't get past that. Seriously, do you think Google would settle on the proxy location if it could get a more precise location??

They're so paranoid over there, I'd say they've taken browser and OS info and same ISP and probably a call on the content of the posts being sock/troll-like, and made a call. From what I've learnt in the past, I don't think they are that concerned with being right. They are more concerned with paranoia about socks under the bed.

Yep, Sydney (which isn't where I am). There's good reasons why previous ones got pinged. And it's obvious if one is willing to put in the effort they can amass a lot of posts like Seth's sock and epete did. Remember with epete, I gave the game away myself. I got bored of the whole thing after 1500 posts. But they definitely block all Tor IP's on principle (even though there could be genuine people who need to tor to out themselves as atheists in dangerous social situations). Another two socks I fucked up and accidentally accessed the second one from the same IP as the first one. This is the only one where I can't work out how they did it. 'whereami' was pretty obviously a sock of someone, as you and cito (and someone else via PM ) worked out almost straight away. I suspect the mods were working on that one in the background. But I don't know how they connected the new one to the old one. I don't think there was anything in 'Mr Sparkle's" first post that would tie it to 'whereami'. But this is good. Socking was getting boring. This introduces a new challenge now!
