Dan Dennett would disagree.Normal wrote:Society is culture. Farmed land is culture. Plastic is culture. Cigarettes are culture. Everything humans change/create is culture. It is of course derived from nature, and uses nature as building bricks. But it is not nature.

Re: Nature != Culture
In ethology, culture is defined as any behavior which is learned rather than inherited. Things get complicated pretty quickly when one begins looking for ways to distinguish between the two. That's not the only possible confound, either.
Nature vs. Culture
reads just like
Nature vs. Nurture
which has been discarded by most ethologists.
The dichotomy is false. But what do I know? I'm just a regular biologist.

Re: Nature != Culture
Having large chunks of land remain undeveloped for the purpose of wildlife preservation is a meme.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
