The fall of Singapore and other military disasters

Post by Clinton Huxley » Thu Feb 16, 2012 1:08 pm

Anniversary of same. That was all a bit of a cock-up. I bet there was an outbreak of tutting in Whitehall. I hear Churchill was seen to do a facepalm.

Got any favourite military underperformances? Any that don't involve France?

The military establishment at Hawaii (prior to Dec. 7th, 1941), I think. I must do some reading on that.

Japan in China, 1937-1945. Despite the Chinese fighting a civil war while dealing with the Japanese, the IJA and IJN never conquered the Middle Kingdom.

Italy.

George Washington during most of the American Revolution.

We clearly didn't do a proper job of taking, occupying and holding Scotland!

Vietnam. The Johnson administrations micromanagement of the war from ~7,000 miles away proved "awkward" to say the least. At one point they actually tried to manage an air battle. :what:

Prince of Wales and the Repulse - it's like the scene from Indiana Jones where some chap waves a sword and Indy just shoots him.

Incheon, Sept. '50. That is, from a NK perspective.
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

They knew the force was screwed, but they didn't have anything else to send, so they sent them.
