Confederate dollar?
That's one item I just came in possession of. A confederate one dollar bill... or maybe I should say a note, as it is overtly a promise to pay that sum 6 months after a peace treaty between the CSA and the Union gets ratified.
The thing is old and scuffed enough that it might even be authentic. Anybody has tips about how much it might be worth, and how to spot whether it's a fake (actual forgery, tourist reproduction, whatever) or not?

Re: Confederate dollar?
Worth practically nothing unless it is some extreme oddity. The CSA printed tons of them during their hyperinflation period.

Why am I completely unsurprised at that?

It's a cliché here, "Worth less than a Rebel dollar."Svartalf wrote:Why am I completely unsurprised at that?

Re: Confederate dollar?
Like Union dollars are worth that much? When they give me the proper weight of gold for out out of Ft Knox, I'll believe it's worth more than the paper George is printed on... and even if they do give me gold, I'd be sorely disappointed at getting a little flake weighing less than a karat. (ok, not much less, at today's prices, a gram of gold is worth U$D 5.08)

Re: Confederate dollar?
In those days you could take a Union dollar to a bank and ask for the equivalent in gold. And you'd get it. Remember the California Gold Rush was actually still on then, so gold was coming into the government steadilyish. The fact that the gold reserves were held in the North was a major factor in the South screwing the pooch.Svartalf wrote:Like Union dollars are worth that much? Re: Confederate dollar?
They are valued collector's items, and the value like any collectable depends on the condition. I saw on ebay a 1$ note in good/vg condition for $12 Yankee money.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Indeed... it looks like it has circulated a lot... and it has been kept a lot folded in 4, to the point it's holed in the middle... historical artifact, yes, collector's item, not so much...normal wrote:Scuffed doesn't sound good for any collector's item =(
