Here's one: What do they mean when they say "America's Hat"?

Close. This is the term that is often used for Canada. Most Canadians are not quite as amused by it.

We're a good country overall, at least until Quebec leaves and we're too weak-willed and ballless to go put down the sedition and hang the ringleaders, but until that happens, Yay Canada!

Well, it depends on what's being said. There is good humour, and there is crossing the line. If some overall friendly fellow mentioned it and he had referred to Canada in better terms previously, then I'd write it off as a joke, but if it was in a dismissive sense, then hulk smash.

Ah US-Canada relations... many a doctorate thesis have been written on the subject

It seems like RP mentioned "affectionately referred to as", thereby acknowledging that it's not seriously "America's hat", and perhaps even hedging themselves away from that viewpoint.

But yeah, the 'blame Canada' stuff, while funny to some, is kinda... not... quality humour, IMO. But who am I to judge?

All countries have stereotypical jokes made about them. In American films more often than not the Englishman is a the Gay bad guy. The Simpsons go on about bad English teeth (so does Family guy) . But does 'Nationalistic offence' give somebody the excuse to write something like 'Grrr... The original comment was a generalisation aimed at a stereotype, the reaction was specific and at an 'individual' (all be it fictitious I sincerely hope that MoNF was not referring to RP).

I have heard it said, and I do agree, that one sign of maturity is to be able to laugh at oneself and really get the joke. I don't always reach this high standard myself, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try.
