My comment earlier was about a perceived derision of where I work. I'm probably overly sensitive and defensive about it. My perception has arisen due to the shutdown reaction I get from some of those academic types who ask me So, what do you do?, as if I'm no longer interesting enough to talk with. Even if the derision is real, why the fuck should I care what anyone thinks about how I earn my living. Sigh.

For most of my working life I have driven trucks. Sometimes people ask what I do for a living. For most of my working life I have driven trucks, and that's what I tell them. Every now and again aspersions are made on account of the nature of my employment. The only effect that has on me is to wonder about the inquirer's state of mind. Oppenheimer and von Braun had brilliant minds, and look at what they made with them. On the other hand, José Saramago spent 30 years earning a living as a locksmith. In 1998 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Neither of the Wright brothers completed high school, and their jobs reflected that while they dabbled with designs for heavier-than-air flying implements. Paul Keating left school aged 15 and never pursued further formal education. preferring to work as a clerk at the Electricity Commission of New South Wales. He was Australia's Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996.

So, yeah, there is no necessary connection between the level of your education, your consequent job and your eventual achievements, but that's not really relevant either except in a very peripheral way. Essentially, it's worth remembering that your worth as a person is not determined by your employment. I evaluate you more on grounds of your character, integrity and compassion.

That is why I don't care about people's judgement whose criterion is my job. I may be despicable in so many ways, but not on account of driving a truck, being a night-filler. a filing clerk or any other menial employment.

I value people solely on their ability to make me laugh. Why else spend time in their company?

It is a minor crime against yourself to attach any inherent significance to the opinions of others (apart from those with whom you have a close relationship). Of course at times public perception may matter from a purely instrumentalist perspective; you don't want to alienate or ire people so that they end up setting fire to your house or shoving shit through your letterbox.

People's value as a person or a companion, their intelligence, wit, or articulateness should never be judged based on where they draw their paycheck from. Maybe it's because I've never felt like my work describes who I am - it's just what I do to be able to do the things I really want to do - but I don't define people by their work. I've met lots of folks who are highly-paid or in high-visibility/well-known positions who were dumb as dirt or stultifyingly boring or simply incurious about the world, and I've known lots of people who are brilliant and funny and intellectually engaged who do jobs on what's often perceived as the less desirable end of the spectrum. I'd rather spend my time with those whom I find interesting and from whom I can learn and grow and laugh.

Which reminds me, my stock response to such an impertinent enquiry is:" I'm a brand ambassador for Primark" , which given my abject lack of sartorial savoir- faire is fairly believable.
