Thanks. Had really good luck as it happens. Wayne and I fired up the Hummer with the fire trailer and donned our wildfire gear and went in search of a way inside the mandatory evacuation perimeter. Cops are assholes when it comes to the press these days, so we had to wind around to find a non-barricaded way into the perimeter. Once inside the perimeter, we were pretty secure because it's only the cops who care to keep the press out. The firefighters like having us around and they don't kick people out because they don't have that authority anyway...they have to call a deputy an they were all busy manning checkpoints.

We were hoping the fire would move and we'd see flames, but it was still a half mile off and the winds started helping out by shifting and dropping substantially, so we hung out at a rally point where they started a backfire till about 2 am. Then we headed out and actually got right to the fire perimeter, where I watched several trees explode into flames that shot hundreds of feet in the air. They only torched for about 40 seconds, then it died down.

Not much really happened, they had a meeting, decided on new assignments and then started a backfire.

It was way further east than I thought at first, nearly 10 miles rather than the 3 I estimated.

In my youth, some of us hippy types would go bush, eat mushrooms, smoke dope, and fire rifles at things...

It seemed like fun at the time...

I've never seen anybody get mean on pot. Any shootings would be more of the "Hold my bong and watch this" category.

Yup.

Met him once. I worked at a raptor rehabilitation center and appeared with him on stage at Red Rocks with an injured Golden Eagle for his performance of "The Hawk and the Eagle" and his spiel for donating to the center. Really nice guy. I still like his music and it's sad he died in a plane crash...but then again it was his own fault.
