Kowloon Walled City

Post by Bella Fortuna » Sun Sep 08, 2013 10:55 pm

I was doing some reading on this fascinating and horrifying place today, and watching a German-language documentary on it. I figured it was an interesting thing to share.

Kowloon Walled City was a dense, overpopulated, and largely ungoverned 6.5 acre enclave in Hong Kong (demolished in the 90s) that at one point housed 50,000 residents. It grew to swallow up roads until it became a dank maze of corridors and warrens with little light, ventilation, electricity, or water. Like something out of JG Ballard's writings, some people spent their whole lives in this lawless settlement that seemed like another world.

These people were the fortunate ones, who had an exterior wall.

This documentary is one of the only films ever made inside.

You think J.G. Ballard, I think Bladerunner. Just imagine what it's like in the dark and the rain.

It also reminds me Venice in a weird sort of way. Sort of "Venice gone wrong", or "Venice's Evil Twin".

The fuck? Why?! :what: :(
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Honk Kong was a special district in China, so initially traffic in and out was limited. Nobody wanted to leave Hong Kong. Well, if they could only go to China.

I visited it and had a good wander around back in 1980(?). I can verify that it was as freaky as it looks.

I remember seeing it many times back when I lived there as a child - but only ever from the outside as we drove past on the bus. My dad was a military policeman and made a few visits to its more accessible fringes to drag out AWOL squaddies from brothels, bars and opium dens. Nobody really knew how many people lived in there at the time (late 60s) and very few really cared! Fascinating place.

Not in Hong Kong if I recall correctly. :tea:
