Success :: Luck vs Hard Work Question?
Now Cowell tells Gove he's stupid: Music mogul attacks Education Secretary
Michael Gove called him stupid for suggesting pupils needn’t bother at school.
Now Simon Cowell has thrown the same insult back at the Education Secretary, claiming he failed to see he was making a ‘positive’ statement about giving people without qualifications a chance.
The music mogul said his shows such as X Factor demonstrate that you can be successful without getting good grades or going to university, and called Mr Gove’s response ‘unbelievable’.
He said: ‘He didn’t bother to call, he didn’t want to hear my side of the story and, stupidly, he didn’t see the positive side of what I was trying to say which is that not everybody who leaves school is going to get great qualifications, or maybe they just don’t have that kind of brain.
‘But, that doesn’t mean that they should be ruled out, or not given a chance... so, if anything, I thought he was irresponsible, because he was basically saying, if you’re not qualified we’re not going to back you, and it’s like, how crazy are you for saying that?’
The row began last month when Cowell, 54, who is worth more than £200million from his record labels and hit shows such as X Factor, said he was ‘useless’ at school but claimed it did not matter.
He attended private Dover College in Kent and then Windsor Technical College and reportedly left with two ‘O’ Levels.
His father helped him find a post in the mail room at the record company EMI, where he went on to sign successful bands such as Five and Westlife before launching the X factor in 2004 with his own production company SyCo.
In an interview with a US radio station he said: ‘I didn’t work hard when I was at school. I left at 16 and I didn’t have any qualifications. I was useless. The secret is to be useless at school and then get lucky.’

Cowell is a fucking prick. In any civilised society the cunt would be a pariah. Don't work hard and hope you're lucky? What an abominable thing to say. However I suppose it is the only way he can have a career. Desperate idiots looking for patronage by the loathsome scumbag. I hope he ends his days singing the songs he has the rights for to help him ignore the sexual abuse he endures from AIDS ridden vagrants.
Gove's a prick too, Cowell though is a stain on our Nation.

Re: Success :: Luck vs Hard Work Question?
Well it's certainly true that our current society doesn't reward hard work alone. Without a decent dollop of luck you'll pretty much get nowhere no matter how hard you work. It's also possible for people to do no work, get lucky, and end up with huge wealth and power. Of course being lucky necessarily only happens to a minority. The sensible thing would be to build a society that did reward hard work over luck. But the likes of Gove are happy to deny reality, perpetuate the problem, and blame the unfortunate for their lack of fortune.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

I'm lucky in that I don't mind hard work.

I notice Simon Cowell doesn't mention nepotism, which is something that makes him very trad establishment.

Shows like American idol and X-Factor show that the industry will take anyone that can make them a profit and push them into the business. I like some of the bands that actually worked and slaved failure after failure for it, and didn't get their fame from nobody to somebody through a reality TV show. Once the next big thing comes along and the industry feels they can't pluck more money out of them, they are through. Then we will see how "successful" they really are. Sure, they may have acquired enough money to live easy the remainder of their lives, but I don't think I would call that being successful any more than I would call Hilton a success just because she inherited her fortune.

The music industry is notoriously difficult to make a living from.
Most of the acts you see these days would be stacking shelves in supermarkets if they hadn't been preened like poodles and coached into the hideous parodies of actual talent that are presented to TV screens worldwide.
Fact is, most modern audiences wouldn't know talent if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

Work hard, in case that helps, and hope for a bit of luck. I got to the top of my own professional greasy pole by that combination. Happened to be in the right place at the right time for two promotions - the first of which I got in an 'acting' capacity and when it came to be advertised I had changed it so out of recognition I was the only one who met the criteria!

With Gove you obtain a regimented ant-hill and Cowell a nation of problem womanisers gamblers. Maybe things are already about as good as they are going to get?
