More idle time for me, so I trawled through some old posts at Ratskep. While admiring the sheer brilliance of my own posts, I stumbled across this one:

Vintage Myers. I did not like his outpourings since the first time I encountered one example of them about four years ago, and this piece does nothing to change my mind. I don't know where to start describing what is wrong with the stuff, so I won't, except to say if ever someone wanted to produce a show requiring a character best referred to as a self-indulgent, belligerent, unreasoning over-the-top tabloid-mouth, I'd know a very suitable candidate.

Someone reminded me that PZ is a member of that forum. Ooops. Apart from that remark, my blatant insult was totally ignored. If asked about it, I predict the moderators will say that they can't be expected to read every post. True, but that doesn't really explain why they find and act on so many insults that target members with a high approval rating while missing almost all that are directed at those on the outer.

In their defence, I think it kinda does explain it. More popular members on the forum will gain more positive attention from the general membership and so any minor slight against them will be reported, whereas the less popular members will gain more negative attention and so any slights against them won't be considered worth reporting.

If you have the general membership regularly reporting any attacks against favourite members and practically ignoring insults directed at those on the outer, then by sheer numbers you'd expect that the mods would see far more reports against the first than the latter - which would translate to more warnings for people insulting the favourites regardless of the actual distribution.

In your case, I imagine the mods either a) didn't see it, b) wrote up a general note sometime later asking people to keep in mind that Myers is still a member, and/or c) ignored it as it was clear that it was accidental, you quickly acknowledged the error when pointed out, and it's not like Myers was around to really take offence at it.

FYI: Last year during the Shermer rape allegation debacle, PZ Meyers' protection from attack on RatSkep was rescinded. I can dig up the mod post to that effect if anyone is interested.

PZ was so outspoken and adamant about it, and Shermer so not instantly suing, that it made me wonder if it was in fact a true story.
