The trouble is that constituencies are never equal so the weight of a vote varies. In PR all votes are exactly the same.
As long is an effort is made to keep them approximately equal, and that party politicians don't get their dirty little hands on the process...

FPTP and other majoritarian systems can generate distorted results even without anyone actively meddling, just by accident. Proportional systems are a requirement if you really want to have equal votes and a fair representation of all parts of society.

Exactly. In the British elections in safe seats all the opposition voters are disenfranchised.

I wasn't saying that proportional representation was not a good idea, just saying that, if you have a standard electoral system, at least make sure that the setting of electoral boundaries is not controlled by party political machinations...

Oh I understand that but it hardly makes any difference. The trouble is there is always a person or persons deciding.

What about a mixed system? STV to elect a local representative plus x number of additional nominated MPs to reflect the national first-choice vote share?
Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.

Cant see the logic really. Our first chamber is elected at a different time as our second. We provincial elections usually two years after the second chamber elections. The total result is reflected in the first chamber which is a totally different beast to the second chamber. It cannot introduce bills for start.
It is all PR also local elections. Never one party wins and local parties are different to national ones.

If you elected your Lords like our Senate then you would have that mix. Although, the proportional representation is at the state level, not national.

Not sure if this was aimed at me but the tories won the last election in my country and this was before the SJW and (third wave) feminism leaked into the mainstream. Corbyn has guaranteed a decade of tory rule so what I'm suppose to suck up apart from victory is anyone's guess. Even I'm concerned about the extreme austerity measures my party is making but without a credible opposition what is to be done. The labour party is now more interested in left wing purity aka identity politics than protecting their supporters from tory policies. I suppose I like a good little princess should suck that up. :?
Aimed at Seth originally, but it applies universally in modern democracies. rEv and I have to put up with our shitty Liberal Party running the joint for the moment (and given the current ALP leader, probably for a long time into the future), and Seth will have to put up with another 4 years (at least) of Democrat rule after the next US election...
