Atheism and Sexuality
Atheism and Sexuality
Ok. This is the main reason why I moved to this forum. I find that many atheist have views of sexuality that are pretty much the same as religious people: modesty, guilt about sex and most shocking: holding the idea of transcendentalism in sex so much as to wait "for the right person" or "the right moment". I can't see how is possible that something that isn't illegal and is even argued as sin or not by believers, can hold moral value for atheist. I personally see it as absurd as trying to trascendentalize lunch.
Please: Those who think that sexuality is more or higher than any other human function, so that requires especial conditions can explain the reasons?

I take it you've not been in our NSFW section then. You need to PM an Admin.

Re: Atheism and Sexuality
Personally I have never thought anything of sex. Even the first time I did it it was just something I did, no big deal.
I've never thought 'Oh that sex was amazing' I've always just thought it was a ride.
I've even shagged women that I hate. Hate to the core. It really is absolutely nothing to me.

Re: Atheism and Sexuality
Hi Sis. First off, you will find as varied a spectrum of sexuality, attitudes to it and so on amongst atheists as with pretty well any group of people. The only thing atheists have in common is a lack of belief in a deity. Of course that does tend to have some consequences as far as other attitudes are concerned.Sisifo wrote: Please: Those who think that sexuality is more or higher than any other human function, so that requires especial conditions can explain the reasons?
Believers' attitudes are pretty varied too I would say. I suppose those in the more orthodox/v conservative tradition might circumscribe their sexuality with religious notions and invent silly rules about it. Even there the arguments raging about gay priest s etc show there is at least limited debate.
To come to you main point however, as an atheist I do not believe in 'higher' or 'lower' functions. My values are based on humanism. I don't believe in idealised love either or that there are any particular rules which I am required to follow concerning my own sexual conduct. As a guy of middle age (at least!) I have experimented all sorts of ..erm..things.
However what I do know is that I am happiest in a monogamous relationship. Not just sexually, but also in terms of the unit I live in, the intimacies it allows - not just sexual, but the real getting to know you stuff. That may be a hangover from early conditioning or whatever, but we are all a result one way and another of that. Sexuality isn't 'higher'. It is so woven into our beings as a result of the imperative to reproduce that it pervades all out lives. Sometimes it enslaves us too I would suggest.

Sisifo - you may find this thread interesting, which is a Poll of sexuality amongst forum members, and started yesterday by coincidence. It's in NSFW (which you'll need to ask an Admin for access to) amongst many other ... um ... threads.
