forget the non violent part, bojo and consorts feel empowered and legitimized, they won't listen to anything that does not directly affect the integrity of their person or their pocketbook.

Re: Extinction Rebellion
I went to the XR christmas carols event in the city, in the Bourke St mall. Great fun had by all - christmas carols with XR lyrics (ranging from corny to clever), street theatre which was a pastiche of Dicken's Christmas Carol, with scrooge being replaced by our Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. The Ghost of Climate future was played by Audrey, XR Melbourne's favourite grandmother, a diminutive Chinese lady, today dressed as the grim reaper. She's been arrested more times than any of us can remember - she has a penchant for chaining herself to the doors of coal company's offices...

People Have A Fundamental Right To Be Protected From Climate Change, A Landmark Court Ruling Says
The Supreme Court of the Netherlands ruled Friday that the government must take urgent action on climate change to protect the fundamental rights of its people.
This decision came in a landmark case begun by the Dutch environmental group Urgenda in 2013, the first in the world to test whether citizens could use human rights law to force their governments to slash greenhouse gas emissions.
International human rights law obligates the Netherlands to reduce emissions, the court ruled, "because of the risk of a dangerous climate change that can also seriously affect the residents of the Netherlands in their right to life and well-being."
"Today, at a moment when people around the world are in need of real hope that governments will act with urgency to address the climate crisis, the Dutch Supreme Court has delivered a groundbreaking decision that confirms that individual governments must do their fair share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," an Urgenda spokesperson said after the ruling...

That is an old story Brian. The Government has revised it policies and says that is all it can do as it no power over our neighbours or other countries which is of course logical.

Re: Extinction Rebellion
It's an 'old story' that hit the headlines on the day I posted it. What the judgement communicates is is not diminished by the difficulty of political practicalities. It affirms the State's responsibility to the citizenry as well as applying human rights indiscriminately. What happens politically is another thing, but the court has let it be known that the citizen's interest are a governmental priority that trumps any partisan political considerations. Quite refreshing in the current climate.

Re: Extinction Rebellion
Home affairs warned Australian government of growing climate disaster risk after May election
The government was warned by the Department of Home Affairs after the May election that Australia faced more frequent and severe heatwaves and bushfires, and that livelihoods would be affected without effective action on climate change.
The department’s incoming government brief to the home affairs minister, Peter Dutton, warned of “disasters” exacerbated by climate change.
“The physical effects of climate change, population growth, and urbanisation mean that without effective action more Australians’ livelihoods will be impacted by disasters into the future and the cost of those disasters will continue to grow,” the brief stated.
“Coordinated national action to drive efforts to reduce these risks and improve national resilience is required.” The brief, obtained under of information, said disasters were only going to get worse...

Re: Extinction Rebellion
We're paying the price for years of Government inaction right now. Not only to take action on climate change, but they should have been beefing up emergency services, and finding solutions to a lack of water.
The whole of south-eastern Australia is under a seemingly permanent blanket of smoke haze...
One thing, though - a hell of a lot more people are talking about climate change, and questioning the complacent attitude of our pathetic politicians...

Now's not the time to be discussing climate change. We should be concentrating on thoughts and prayers.
