While the Russian side of the Arctic, specifically the Northern Sea Route (NSR), is becoming more accessible due to climate change and Russian investment in icebreakers, the "Northwest Passage" is primarily a Canadian route, not a Russian one.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Northern Sea Route (NSR) vs. Northwest Passage:
The NSR, also known as the Northeast Passage, is the route along Russia's northern coastline, while the Northwest Passage is the route through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Russian Investment and Development:
Russia has been actively investing in developing the NSR, including building icebreakers, to facilitate shipping and resource extraction in the Arctic.
Climate Change and Increased Accessibility:
Climate change and melting sea ice are making both the NSR and the Northwest Passage more navigable, potentially opening up new shipping routes.
Geopolitical Implications:
The opening of these Arctic routes has significant geopolitical implications, as it could lead to increased competition and tensions in the region.
Russian Control of the NSR:
Russia asserts control over the NSR, requiring foreign vessels to obtain permission to transit its internal waters, and has implemented measures to control navigation of foreign warships.
Canadian Perspective on Northwest Passage:
Canada views the Northwest Passage as part of its internal waters and asserts its sovereignty over the route, while the US argues for a right of "transit passage" through the straits.
Limited Opportunities for Travel:
While there are opportunities for tourists to explore the Russian Arctic, including voyages along the Northern Sea Route, access to the Northwest Passage is generally limited.

Its already open on the Russian side and Russia has put in a lot of infrastructure.

So Carney advises Trudeau, who drives his career into the ground following it. Freeland ragequits rather than continuing with him, and is not alone. After Trudeau himself quits, he cancels elections, then he, Freeland et al select Carney as his replacement.
Who then is popular...?
Sounds like the recipients of transfer payments are firmly in favour of more of whatever that was.

Someone needs to tell Poilièvre that doing that amount of botox is an example of gender-affirming care.

Honestly, I don't think there is any real difference between the four parties. Maybe PPC would do something different, but Canadians don't want that. They want very much to keep the major decisions firmly east. In an unrelated coincidence, federal transfer payments go firmly to those places that make the decisions for the whole place.

Reach out. Say hi. Make a little time for someone you've been missing.Isolation or loneliness was significantly more common among Track 2 patients (47.1pc) compared to Track 1 patients (those within six months of death) at 21.1pc, but we can still see feeling isolated was significant. Crucially, 45.1pc of Track 1 and 49.2pc of Track 2 patients cited feeling like a “burden on family, friends or caregivers” as a key reason for their suffering.
The BCCLA started this, and now that the Canadian government gave it to them - good and hard, they are reconsidering the boundaries. Holy shit it looks out of control.“Of particular concern are reports of MAID being used in prisons while incarcerated individuals were shackled to their beds, the programme’s lack of legal oversight, disproportionate representation of impoverished people receiving assisted suicide, and healthcare practitioners offering MAID when patients sought support for living,” the BCCLA stated.

I never thought I’d write these words:
Canada just walked away from the United States. We ended our economic and security ties with Trump’s America, but it was historically stunning nonetheless.
Not in some passive, “we’re disappointed” way. Not a strongly-worded letter. Not a polite diplomatic eye-roll. No — Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a full break-up speech on live TV.
