Sounds woke.

Very. Nice to see the ladies writing stories as good as the men though.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
I have a Finnish approved translation of the Kalevala to read. It is a bit tedious to read in the original as it is in Karelian dialec of the 1700s and 1800s. But I did read both versions for a few lines. The word billow was always confusing to me. Something to do with water and waves I knew. It seems to mean....waves. Something of a bigger wave. But also an undulating mass of...something.

There are billowing clouds and billowing waves.....billowing bosoms if that's your thing

Leckie a good writer. Read her series starting with Ancillary Justice which won everything - what a debut.

very woke indeed ....Ann Leckie (born March 2, 1966) is an American author of science fiction and fantasy. Her 2013 debut novel Ancillary Justice, which features artificial consciousness and gender-blindness, won the 2014 Hugo Award for "Best Novel", as well as the Nebula Award

If you look at the Hugo and other prizes recently that should be no surprise at all.
Andre Norton wrote a whole library of work decades ago,
So did Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series and other series of hers.
N. K. Jemisin won the Hugo Award in 2016, 2017, and 2018 for each book in her Broken Earth trilogy a rare triple.
''as good as the men" ?? why how misogynist of you.
What I like are voices coming from other cultures, notably Chinese ...Three Body Problem for instance.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
I've been reading female writers almost exclusively the last two years. There's a lot to catch up on.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)
I was at the bookstore looking for slim volumes. Had Vonnegut's Sirens of Titan and the first Douglas Adams book in hand. The latter was smaller so took that. Also, I find fake science of the 1950s hard to read now. And in general, Adams is more or less parody of sci fi. I will read Slaughterhouse 5 again some day.
BUT, I may read Sirens of Titan again if i find it cheap on eBay after vacation. He invented Elon Musk there.

I think I might go back to that one as well. I think I have a copy of Player Piano in a box somewhere too.Tero wrote:...

Gonna be a movie soon. Not sure how I missed listening to this. Same author as The Martian ....same humour and a good narrator.

Re: What are you reading now? (Chapter 2)

snip - immediately after the first plane hits...survivors recounting
WowVanessa Lawrence: When the blast hit, the first thing that came into my head was, Did I leave my tote by an electrical socket? It was that horrible thing, Oh, my God! How am I going to explain this? Even going down the stairs, it was still, Was this me? What if this is my fault?
Anthony R. Whitaker, World Trade Center (WTC) commander, PAPD, North Tower ground-level lobby: I saw two people out of the corner of my left eye. They were on fire. They ran toward me, and then they ran right past me. They issued no sound. All their clothes were burnt off, and they were smoldering.
David Kravette: One of the girls who worked with me, Lauren Manning, was coming into the lobby when that fireball came down, and it took her through the glass. She was burned over 80 percent of her body and survived. If I was 20 yards further along in my walk, I would be dead or severely burned. There was no fire afterwards. It literally exploded out, burned itself out, and disappeared within seconds. It was three, four, five seconds at most.
Harry Waizer: The elevator started to fall. It burst into flames. I had a briefcase, a cloth briefcase, in my hand, and I was using it to try to beat out the flames. I was burned on my legs and on my arms. The elevator initially was plummeting, then an emergency system kicked in, because it started gliding. As it was going, I got hit in the face by a fireball that came in through the gap between the elevator doors and the body of the elevator. I have this impression of this orange ball coming at my face and a sensation—I can’t call it a burning—of it making contact and then it was gone.
