French President Emmanuel Macron's appearance at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum has made headlines, but not for any policy reasons.

Mr Macron addressed world leaders at the event in Davos, Switzerland, wearing a pair of reflective silver-framed aviator sunglasses, a fashion choice that has overshadowed much of the event.

Questions have emerged about whether the president was trying to cover up a big night, hide an injury, or if he was simply trying a new look.

Here's what we know:

Why was Macron wearing sunglasses?

As it turns out, Mr Macron wasn't throwing shade at anyone.

The French president has a burst blood vessel in one of his eyes, which is medically known as a subconjunctival haemorrhage, as confirmed by the Élysée Palace.

The sunglasses are to cover up what can be a disturbing-looking eye.

"He is wearing glasses because of photosensitivity, while the minor issue mentioned last week clears up," a source close to Mr Macron said.
