The why god is wonderful thread
Lookit what he did. He made massive fields of grass and *then* made cows which can eat grass and give milk just for us to put in our tea and meat for McDonalds. Isn't that amazing!?

If you like your nuclear weapons up-close-and-personal then you really, really, and I do mean really, need to get your head examined.Gawdzilla wrote:Area weapons are not up-close-and-personal. The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

x-fucking-zakly. I may or may not have seen a report that may or may not have ever existed that purportedly claimed the Sovs were cool with "man-pack nukes" because they saw no real need to tell the troops what they were packing. Detonation was to be remote, of course.DP wrote:If you can see the target with a MK1 eyeball it's too close for a nuke.

Meaning that the guy carrying it didn't have the trigger, so once he was in position some REMF would push the button?Gawdzilla wrote:x-fucking-zakly. He wouldn't even know what he was carrying. Neither would the two "politicals" that were there to insure he went where he was told. Luckily the KGB and the GRU couldn't decide who would have control of them, so they (theoretically) weren't deployed.DP wrote:Meaning that the guy carrying it didn't have the trigger, so once he was in position some REMF would push the button?

KGB traditionally had control of all Soviet nuclear weapons, didn't they?Gawdzilla wrote:He wouldn't even know what he was carrying. KGB had control of the warheads, but not the missiles. The argument here, however, was that it was not a political decision but a tactical one. The US canned the Davey Crocket because of similar issues.DP wrote:KGB traditionally had control of all Soviet nuclear weapons, didn't they?Gawdzilla wrote:He wouldn't even know what he was carrying. Why? Give the warheads to the intelligence specialists and let them deploy them personally. 2 birds, 1 stone.Gawdzilla wrote:KGB had control of the warheads, but not the missiles.
