Pombolo wrote:I was going to mention Doom, but people have already, so I'll recount an old experience playing the first Thief game. I had carefully and patiently snuck into someone's castle ground, ascended a locked tower, and then leaped across a guard patrol path onto the balcony opposite -gaining me access to the castle. As I was rummaging around the room with the balcony I accidentally caused some noise - and heard the patrolling guards below stop their walking.
I thought the alarm would be raised, so I waited for a while, couldn't hear anything, and then padded toward the balcony to have a peer at what was going on. I didn't hear the guards mumbling about 'mysterious noses', so I assumed they had just gone on their way. As I turn around to walk back into the room an arrow flashes directly in front of my face and *thunks* into the wooden arch beside me. I literally jumped in my seat (the Thief games are usually quiet, as noise play a large part of the stealth aspect), as I transitioned from 'I'm completely hidden, and nobody knows I'm here' to 'That bugger was waiting for me!'
It was very surreal standing stock still, in game, from my real shock and just looking at the arrow lodged into the wooden plank right in front of my face.
that sounds like an awesome experience!! I'm actually going through S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat at the moment, and anytime I have to deal with bloodsuckers my skin crawls and I freak out, and invariably end up dead

it doesn't help that the f**kers are mainly invisible

I got freaked out a few times when playing the original F.E.A.R game on my PC. Alma was always creeping around in the shadows making scary little girl noises.

I think parts of Half Life had to do it for me. It's just the way the whole story was told too. I don't think any first person shooter should be allowed to have cut scenes, and Half Life demonstrated perfectly how to do it.
The marine levels on the Alien vs. Predator games too.

yeah, I still turn off the lights, put on my headphones and play F.E.A.R. and/or F.E.A.R. 2 every now and again whenever I need a good scare

Alien vs Predator from about 2000 on the pc.
Playing as the marine you got the pinging radar display thingy. As the pings got more insistent you knew something was about to happen and it would be very unpleasant. You would have the machine screaming at you that you were about to die a grisly death. You turn a corner into an empty room and then .....the entire screen is filled with one of those face huggers in an instant and you are very very dead.
I had a house mate at the time who could only play it during the daytime and only then in a well lit room!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.

Over at the computerclub we all bought Gravis Ultrasound cards specially for Doom (and for the demoscene) because the sound was so much better. One of my mates always took his office chair on wheels with him from home. When he played Doom singleplayer the first time he fell of it twice because he jumped up and bounced away.

For me it was the beginning of the original Unreal. You're walking around that ship, and everybody you come across is dead, and there are people screaming just "off camera," and there's something running around that you can't quite see, and you don't have a weapon yet.

In no particular order.

Extremely creepy and it never really let up.
F.E.A.R - Especially some moments in Extraction Point. Only game to make the hair on my arms stand up.
Half - Life - Pretty creepy and a number of jump out of your seat moments.
Doom 3 - Awesome atmosphere. The startling moments were often cheap, but they always worked.
Half - Life 2 - Not very scary, but Ravenholm was pretty creepy.
System Shock 2 - Robots is scary!

When I got pissed off playing Psychonauts and in frustration punched the "off" button on my thousand dollar TV, shattering the plastic facade. I was afraid I'd fucked myself and would have to buy a new telly, but thank goodness it still works. Looks like shit. But still works.
Oh. You mean scary, like, as in the game itself? The first Fatal Frame game, then. Creeped me right the fuck out!
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Oh, so did I, dude. In fact I loved it, and have been meaning to get a related tattoo. But one particular part was pissing me off so bad. Can't remember now what it might have been...

That was a pretty under rated game with some fantastic elements. The beginning was one of them. When one of the doors on the ship jammed shut and whatever it was got rather unpleasant with the unfortunate sod on the other side of the door was a memorable moment for me. I remember thinking that i needed a considerably larger gun!

yeah, that was pretty damn awesome

system shock 2 is kinda like that in that you're trapped on a ship with totally inadequate firepower and death roaming the corridors
