I had a great day today. My daughter had a day off, and I am off work too until Monday. She phoned me a couple of days ago and we arranged to go somewhere with the dogs for a walk and to spend some time together. She is 20 and just such a great person.
Anyway off we went for a long day out and a couple of lovely walks in some of the gentler countryside bits of Cumbria and we got talking all sorts of things, but at one point, thinking about our pooches about dog breeding. She is bright enough, though not academic and she asked how I thought a Chihuahua and a Great Dane could both originate with a wolf.
I spoke at some length about selective and then natural selection, and she was fascinated - not indulging her old dad (cos she asked lots of clarification questions) and much to my satisfaction, I realised I had done a good job of explaining it all.
At another point in the day having picked up some local Cumberland sausage cooked and made up into a bun from Cranston's in Penrith (something you have to try if you get the chance!), she asked me if I thought it might be better to have faith in a god even if you knew in your heart there was no such thing as it might make you feel better about the world and life. I asked her if she would prefer to be ignorant and happy or perhaps nearer the truth, but without the consolation of religion. She agreed that the second option was the one she would prefer.
Seems I have done somethign right in bringing up the girl! Gooooo Hannah!
The dogs were knackered by the time we got home too!

Nice one Rum.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Cumberland sausage
I'm sorry, what were you talking about

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

I really liked your story, but this bit caught my eye, especially the highlighted part. Why would an religious (ignorant?) worldview be linked to a happier existence? Ignorance is bliss, yes, but my happiness is linked to my knowing.Rum wrote:At another point in the day having picked up some local Cumberland sausage cooked and made up into a bun from Cranston's in Penrith (something you have to try if you get the chance!), she asked me if I thought it might be better to have faith in a god even if you knew in your heart there was no such thing as it might make you feel better about the world and life. You get an afterlife and god makes everything fair at the end or something.

Nice one Rum! Congrats on bringing up a young lady that will choose to think about these things, with a little assistance from yourself of course!
