Did Washington initiate the war? I thought it was clear I was talking about "forward defense", and I think Ashton Black was implying that as well. As for the Confederates, it is also clear that they did think they had sufficient resources to win because they could reasonably regard British support as part of them.

I'd like to hear of an instance where an invader initiated a war in the full expectation to fail on account of not being willing or able to commit sufficient resources for success.
Washington worked for the Continental Congress. The Congress initiated the war knowing they couldn't defeat the English Army by themselves. (And no, it wasn't clear at all.) As for the Confederates, on what do you base that premise? :dono:

Yeah, we were smart enough to put a couple of oceans between us and the troublemakers.

The Korean War was the red-headed step-child of wars. And technically, it's still going on. They never signed off on ending it. Politics...

The South just won 1-0 a few days ago in a WC qualifier. Today NK launched a "rocket" (read: missle test). Three months after I got here in '96, there was an incursion of 28 NK commandos who got stranded when their submarine crapped out off the east coast. They were chased for 2 months, living off roots, berries etc, before it was over. 27 killed, 1 captured wounded, 1 escaped back to the North. Of those killed, about half knelt and submitted to execution by their commander, who subequently offed himself. There have been smaller-scale repeat versions since, and there have been fatal naval clashes every other year or so in the Yellow Sea. It's a nagging, wimpy war, all things considered. Stubborn lot, these. I think they ought to shit or get off the pot, but nobody here is asking for my opinion. Tomorrow is just another day.

Genghis Khan vs China, c 1217. Glad I wasn't there. At least, not there and Chinese.

Sorry if I rambled a bit. Nearing bedtime here.

I saw the game. That was no soccer match, there should have been way more red and yellow cards.

No joke! It was painful to watch. My students (university-level) weren't even very proud of it. A win is a win, I guess, but...a good game would have been more satisfying. :ddpan:

Absolutely correct.

Although, as I always point out to people: The fact that the US had the lowest per capita death rate of any major combatant in WW II wouldn't be of any consolation to, say, a Marine about to land on some heavily defended Pacific island. Some of those units suffered appalling casualty rates, right up to the end of the Okinawa campaign. :levi:
