Is there some rule about Shakers that applies here?

I think it would make a great T-shirt.The Mad Hatter wrote:Yes, well, "eating, sleeping, fucking and suicidal" isn't exactly a label I'd like to adopt.
But here’s the thing about rights. They’re not actually supposed to be voted on. That’s why they’re called rights. ~Rachel Maddow August 2010

At the same time, clinging to it without just cause is irrational. The Mad Hatter wrote:Survival Instinct. If you've given it up without just cause, then you aren't rational.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Re: Suicide intervention discussion
I am 59 and looking 'old age' in the face. I am one of the older members here, but it seems to be a fact of life that until you are old it is almost impossible not to think of t as something that happens to other people. Rest assured, if you are lucky, you too will arrive here. I also have parents in their mid 80s, facing, probably quite soon, their own deaths.
I plan to make arrangements so that when it comes to it, if life is not as I would like it to be..not 'intolerable', not 'the quality of life' I would want, but the LIFE I am able to tolerate and feel comfortable with, the life I, not anyone else, wants to live, I will end it.
My choice, not anyone else's. At my age it begins to feel kind of real.

As you may have noticed and without coercion, Feck has done a nice job of expressing views that are inline with mine so I'll leave Feck to it. Keep in mind, I don't think anyone is arguing to commit suicide randomly. I think we're arguing that the person with the most rights over their death is the individual. The state shouldn't make us live. The state should be a place where people would want to live. The Mad Hatter wrote:Yes, well, "eating, sleeping, fucking and suicidal" isn't exactly a label I'd like to adopt.

Wow. Times have really changed in 15 short years. Maybe especially in Canada.
