Yeah, I basically do not support a lot of them type of drugs. Pain, fine, other stuff in the head, not so great a solution.
I do have a bottle of xanax. I take it on plane trips, but have not started freaking out yet.

So where is our loving atheist community, in real life? Not to say you folks are not family, but...Other things that help the "mildly" depressed (it doesn't feel mild, it's just not the "classic" depression):
--religious faith, belonging to a warm and loving church, church suppers and discussion groups, particularly one that expects you to volunteer and do something to help others. (teaching Sunday school is good)
--getting outside in nature (cubicle life sucks)
--sunshine every day (no sunblock as this prevents Vitamin D absorption
--going away on holiday (escape horrible family, get more sun, escape cubicle)
--getting a dog (my kid, who was severely disturbed when young, got out of the hospital and ran to hug the family golden and said "You are the best psychiatrist ever...)

So I have to go to one of them meets? I could just call up Godzilla, but that fire breathing, well, I am not sure what to expect...
Re: Antidepressents don't do jeebers for mild depression
Why would you have to go to 'one of them meets'? Couldn't you just hire a prostitute where you are and have her (or him) hold up a monitor in front of their face with Rationalia on it?

I reckon they work for me and I don't consider myself a 'seriousl' case. Once my brand and dosage of drugs was right, I noticed I was much calmer and remain so.

Like with many psychological problems, the symptoms of depression could well be caused by various very different causes. That's one of the big problems of psychology: many pathologies are only defined by their symptoms, not by the underlying mechanisms. Different types of depression may have totally unrelated causes, making medication an effective treatment for some, but not for other types of depression.

It is also possible the effect could be psychosomatic.MCJ wrote:I reckon they work for me and I don't consider myself a 'seriousl' case. Once my brand and dosage of drugs was right, I noticed I was much calmer and remain so.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I was thinking the same thing. Depression is expressed mentally, physically, and emotionally to varying degrees in different people and at different times, it is not hard to see how depression may have several different causes, so that can be treated by medication and some that can't.JOZeldenrust wrote:Like with many psychological problems, the symptoms of depression could well be caused by various very different causes. Placebos are so powerful that a depressent like a glass of wine or two can lift you out of feeling miserable.

Except no.

Re: Antidepressents don't do jeebers for mild depression
Not for a severe depression.
For mild cases the same calming effect can be achieve via alternative means, one of the best is a gym membership.

I think I'll take the placebos and leave the heavy lifting for more deserving cases.Deersbee wrote:Not for a severe depression.

Eurgh... the 'Gym Membership' is rubbish. It's regular exercise which releases endorphins, but that isn't a cure. It is one factor in effective management, on it's own it's useless. I've read those studies too.
