I kinda like the analogy (though haven't read the references) and want to add this:
If there is a bomb that has exploded, although we can't reconstruct the state of the bomb, we see evidence of its nature. I.e. if it was a U bomb, we'd see thorium, plutonium, uranium etc. in its aftermath. From this we can gather clues of the nature of the bomb, despite the original bomb no logger existing.
