Thanks, I need to steal a copy of that book now.
I have it somewhere. Don't remember that story though, must dig it out.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

I don't know what the means, but it doesn't sound like something I'd like. :(

I kinda like the analogy (though haven't read the references) and want to add this:

If there is a bomb that has exploded, although we can't reconstruct the state of the bomb, we see evidence of its nature. I.e. if it was a U bomb, we'd see thorium, plutonium, uranium etc. in its aftermath. From this we can gather clues of the nature of the bomb, despite the original bomb no logger existing.
To ignore the absence of evidence is the base of true faith.
