Does anyone know why this is suddenly in the news? It's been known for years that this is a dying red giant that could blow in the next million years.
From my limited knowledge, there is no acknowledged warning that a supernova is immenent, except a blast of nutrinos hours before the big blast.

This is a variable red giant, that brightens and dims on a regular basis, so any change in brightness and size is not necessarily significant.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
