Horizon, Jan.24 2011 - Science Under Attack

Post by klr » Sun Jan 23, 2011 9:16 pm

... that's BBC2, 9pm Zulu time, tomorrow the 24th January.:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00y4yql
Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse examines why science appears to be under attack, and why public trust in key scientific theories has been eroded - from the theory that man-made climate change is warming our planet, to the safety of GM food, or that HIV causes AIDS.

He interviews scientists and campaigners from both sides of the climate change debate, and travels to New York to meet Tony, who has HIV but doesn't believe that that the virus is responsible for AIDS.

This is a passionate defence of the importance of scientific evidence and the power of experiment, and a look at what scientists themselves need to do to earn trust in controversial areas of science in the 21st century.

is that NOVA in the US?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Program about the current trend in attacking scientific ideas including man-made global-warming, evolution and HIV as a cause of AIDS.

I started a thread about this a few days ago, but in the Stage and Screen forum.

I watched the whole thing live. I've never seen a greater pile of crap.
Paul Nurse showed an extremely one-sided view of the relationship between science and the public, where the scientists are wise and all knowing, and the public constantly misunderstand them. I'm afraid the Nobel Prize has gone to his head, which is sad, considering what a joke the Nobel Prize has become.

The program led with his extremely shallow outline of the GW issues, some very dodgy statistics, and then "balanced" it with some of the weakest counter-arguments. A completely un-balanced presentation.

Then he tried to give the impression that the only people who had doubts were untrained journalists, and people surfing the web, while the "convinced" were all good and wise scientists like him.

If this one-sided piece of crap is meant to somehow get more respect for "scientists", then it certainly failed for me, because my respect plummeted, especially for the Nobel Prize badge. And I didn't think it could go any lower.
.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Mainly it was just a bit dull. The main revelation was that the journalist Delingpole looks like one of the undead.
