To explain the sun :
1) Explain what hydrogen is.
2) Explain what an isotope of hydrogen is.
3) Explain what helium is, and how it's made by fusion.
4) Explain why there is so much hydrogen floating around in space.
5) Explain how gravity can make it clump together when it's very very cold.
6) Explain how the shock wave of a supernova can instigate the clumping together.
7) Explain that fusion can start, when temperature and pressure reach a critical level.
8) Explain that once fusion starts, the heat generated keeps the reaction going till the fuel runs low.
That should cover the basics of the sun.

Best explanation of an eclipse for that age group is always the baseball and thumbnail method, and it also works for demonstrating parallax. Have them hold out a baseball at arms length with one eye closed, the n have them cover the open eye with their thumbnail. Move from side to side and, hey presto! Eclipse!
