Match the theories, A, B, C and D, with the numbers 1– 4 in the sentences.

A Creationism
B Intelligent Design
C Lamarckism
D Darwinism

The idea that Manx cats, which have no tails, are the offspring of a cat which originally lost its tail in
an accident could be used to support . . . 1 . . . .

Unsuccessful competitors die and so do not reproduce, is part of the theory of . . . 2 . . . .

The complicated way in which cells work can be used to support . . . 3 . . . .

The observation that fossils of all the different kinds of animals appear suddenly in the rocks, with no
evidence of ancestors, supports . . . 4 . . . .
Holy shit that's awful - from the higher tier section of a biology exam!

When I did it, I remember learning Lamarckism, but only so it could be explained how Darwin and Mendel's work showed it was wrong. How the hell can they get creationism in there, and treated like an equal theory?!
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Yeah, it was just Evolution by Natural Selection v Lamarckism when I did the same exam back in about 92. It's quite worrying, as with the wrong biology teacher kids could walk away believing there's a huge controversy.

An outrage. Factor in this from the BBC today...
Across the UK in 2009, just 17% of 16 to 18-year-olds took one or more science A-level, or equivalent qualification, the report says.

In the same year, 17% of secondary schools in England did not enter a single pupil for A-level physics. In Wales this figure was 13% and in Northern Ireland it was 43%.
UK? Doomed.
