Geometric problem that's been driving me crazy...
http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=475308
I'd like to know if any of you can understand how to solve it. So far, we're a bunch of people struggling with it online, and even my teacher and classmates had no clue. I even posted it on my facebook. The replies at physicsforums didn't help me find the radius yet (I'm femme_physics).... does anyone know how to solve for r?

Can't view the diagram without signing up there - can you attach it, please?

I'm interested now. Getting a pencil and paper to hand...

Squaring the circle problem there?

Do you wanna be more specific?

Just looking at the drawing and not the problem it looks like you are trying to develop a rule that allows you to determine the arc between those two points. If I had to deal with that I'd be looking at the triangles formed rather than the arc itself. And that requires some form of squaring the circle.Dory wrote:Do you wanna be more specific?

Well that doesn't sound funny at all!

Well, saying "it seems like squaring the circle" is like looking at the statics problem and saying "that looks like it needs equilibrium equations

You have two sides and one angle, the rest is mechanics. (However, AFAIK the squaring the circle problem has never been solved. You have to go for an approximation.)Dory wrote:Well that doesn't sound funny at all!

You're looking for a semicircular hypotenuse. Have fun.Dory wrote:Well, saying "it seems like squaring the circle" is like looking at the statics problem and saying "that looks like it needs equilibrium equations
Re: Geometric problem that's been driving me crazy...
I know what I have, and I know what is the rest... I don't know how to solve it..believe me tons of people have tried, it's easy to just throw things in the air. I even have my own scanned diagram of the attempt I've made

I just saw this comment.Gawdzilla wrote:You're looking for a semicircular hypotenuse. Have fun.Dory wrote:Well, saying "it seems like squaring the circle" is like looking at the statics problem and saying "that looks like it needs equilibrium equations
Are you saying the hypotenuse is 6, the opposite is 2.... and now I solve with pythagorean to find the adjacent and divide it by 2 for the radius?
