Re: SETI
We're moving away from radio now, in fifty years it will be a curiosity. So, 150 years of radio for us. If that's typical we have a 150 year window to "hear" a civilization that way. We've been "civilized" for a few thousand years, so 150 years is a small percentage of that. If we survive for another few thousand years that 150 year window is even smaller a percentage.
BTW, I run Seti@home "just in case."

Re: SETI
Once upon a time, there was a small island. On this island lived a small tribe. One member of this tribe often wondered whether there were people living on any of the other islands he could see on the horizon. Unfortunately his tribe had not yet invented canoe technology, so he couldn't go to the other islands and see for himself, so he did the next best thing.
Day and night, Seti (for that was his name) watched for smoke signals and listened for the sound of distant drums. Sometimes he also built signal fires and played talking drums himself, in the hope of attracting their attention.
Meanwhile, the people on the other islands were far too busy watching TV, surfing the internet and talking on their mobile phones to notice the smoke on the horizon.

Disagree. The reward is going to be minimal. So there is something else intelligent out there. Probably a thousand light years away. Meaning intelligent life a thousand years ago. Any reply would take a thousand years, and would they understand it anyway?Mysturji wrote:The program with the slightest chance of the greatest reward.

I'm fully convinced in ET life somewhere in the Galaxy anyway, so it wouldn't amaze me.
I think it would be quickly taken for granted, and only be a big story for a couple of months.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Intelligent life will always out-compete itself to rapid extinction.

If they're transmitting the specs for a wormhole transport, on the other hand...mistermack wrote:Disagree. The reward is going to be minimal. So there is something else intelligent out there.
