Except it's wrong, and the earthquake could affect the city quite easily. The effect was a disaster, affecting the city and its people.rachelbean wrote:Using Ani's explanation you can work it out pretty easily, for instance: What I do has an affect on people, the effects of which may vary.Psychoserenity wrote:See - used like this I have no idea which is right or wrong - and I can't work it out based on any explanations.rachelbean wrote:Weird, it doesn't affect me at all
Effect is (usually) a noun, if you can say thE whatever, then it's Effect.

Re: Affect and effect
Yes, I realized the noun/verb distinction was a lot more helpful which is why I followed up with that. It's not always right, but the exceptions are rare and not normally where people get confused.Tigger wrote:Except it's wrong, and the earthquake could affect the city quite easily. Which causes my avoidance of both of those words.Pappa wrote:I think that's the problem. I forget because I know one of them (effect) also means to cause something to come into being as a verb.FBM wrote:It doesn't help that both can be used as either nouns or verbs.

Lot's of things affect me but the only thing that has ever effected me is my parents fucking.

Except you got that bit wrong, and the first "effected" means "to bring about".Gawdzilla wrote:Why is that confusing?Pappa wrote:This is why it can be confusing:
