See - used like this I have no idea which is right or wrong - and I can't work it out based on any explanations.

Using Ani's explanation you can work it out pretty easily, for instance: What I do has an affect on people, the effects of which may vary.

Except it's wrong, and the earthquake could affect the city quite easily. The effect was a disaster, affecting the city and its people.

Effect is (usually) a noun, if you can say thE whatever, then it's Effect.

Yes, I realized the noun/verb distinction was a lot more helpful which is why I followed up with that. It's not always right, but the exceptions are rare and not normally where people get confused.

It doesn't help that both can be used as either nouns or verbs.

I think that's the problem. I forget because I know one of them (effect) also means to cause something to come into being as a verb.

Which causes my avoidance of both of those words.

Just go with affection and effective.

Except you got that bit wrong, and the first "effected" means "to bring about".
